Osteopathy

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders and the effects of these conditions on a patient’s general health.

Osteopaths seek to restore optimal functioning of the body, where possible without the use of drugs or surgery. Osteopathy is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual depends on their bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue functioning smoothly together.

Osteopaths use a holistic, patient-centered approach to health. Meaning they consider symptoms in the context of the patient’s full medical history, as well as their lifestyle and personal circumstances.

All with the aim of relieving pain as quickly as possible and preventing symptoms from recurring.

  • The initial consultation takes approximately 45 minutes and will consist of a full case history about your symptoms, lifestyle and general health.

This will be followed by a comprehensive examination to determine the cause of your pain and if Osteopathy can help you.

In order to examine the area properly, it may be necessary to remove some clothing. Please make your Osteopath aware if you are uncomfortable with this.

You’ll receive an explanation as to what’s causing your pain, how it can be managed and the likely number of sessions to resolve or significantly improve your pain.

Once you have understood and agreed, you’ll receive Osteopathic treatment as part of the initial consultation.

  • Osteopathic treatment uses hands-on techniques tailored to you and your condition.

These techniques consist of stretching muscles, joints and ligaments, joint articulation, spinal manipulation and soft tissue massage.

These techniques increase the blood and nerve supply to tissues which assists your body’s own healing mechanisms.

In addition to treatment, you may also be provided with simple exercises and advice to carry out in between appointments.

All with the aim of relieving pain as quickly as possible and preventing symptoms from recurring.
