Art therapy is a unique creative process where working with the arts and psychotherapy combine to aid individual growth, awareness and healing. In art therapy no art skills are required – you are free to make images as a way to express feelings and emotions. The aim is to ease distress, increase awareness, resolve conflicts, and/or cope with trauma. Art therapy can help you to manage and resolve emotional problems, relationship difficulties, self-esteem, bereavement, depression, anxiety, feeling stuck, health problems and general life struggles.
Working with the arts by its very nature is healing. By engaging in the non-verbal process you can discover new insights and self-understanding, supported by the art therapist who guides you through the process. It is a supportive experience and the content of the sessions, as well as the artwork, is kept safe and confidential.
What is Integrative Art Psychotherapy?
As an integrative Art Psychotherapist I am able to draw on the theories and practices of different approaches that take account of the client’s needs and personal styles. It also means that I am able to use a range of different arts that can be adapted to tailor the therapy to suit the client, which may also change and develop as the therapy progresses. As well as the visual arts I also work with clay, sand tray, bodywork, drama, music and poetry.
I aim to bring warmth, honesty and creativity to the therapeutic work and I also believe that an important part of the healing is in the relationship created during this process. I offer a space to share difficult feelings in a safe and supportive atmosphere without judgement.
I hold a BA(hons) in Fine Art and a Post Graduate teaching qualification. I am currently in my second year of the three year Masters Degree in Art Psychotherapy. I am currently working as an Art Psychotherapist within the NHS sector providing an integrative psychodynamic approach. Previously I have worked in the voluntary sector, offering psychotherapy for victims of abuse and grief.
