What is Psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is a talking therapy that allows the individual to explore problems and difficulties with a trained Psychotherapist. It is often used to treat emotional problems and mental health conditions, but equally, people often engage in psychotherapy because they are curious about themselves and wish to gain a better understanding of their thoughts, feelings, and the way they relate to others.
What is Psychodynamic Psychotherapy?
Psychodynamic psychotherapy offers you the opportunity to meet with a therapist and talk about the things that are troubling you the most. There is no set or prescribed way of engaging in psychodynamic psychotherapy; the therapist will encourage you to think about the difficulties you are experiencing and help you explore patterns in your thinking, behaviour, and relationships. You are encouraged to think about your previous life experiences and how they may impact upon you now, and in the future.
Why should I choose Psychodynamic Psychotherapy?
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is different from most other therapies in that it aims to bring about a deeper, more meaningful, and longer lasting understanding for the individual. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is used within the NHS to help and treat people with emotional and relationship problems through reducing levels of anxiety and distress. Psychodynamic psychotherapy has proven to be effective in the treatment of; anxiety, depression, eating disorders and psychosomatic conditions.
The reasons people decide to engage in psychodynamic psychotherapy are wide and far reaching and it isn’t always because of one reason alone. Some of the more common reasons individuals engage in therapy are;
- Relationship issues
- Separation and divorce
- Work related issues
- Isolation and/or loneliness
- Addiction to illegal and legal substances including alcohol
- Over-whelming feeling of panic
- Feeling detached from others/not being able to feel
- Being the victim or perpetrator of abuse
This list provides just a few of the reasons why you or someone you know may consider engaging in psychodynamic psychotherapy. Anyone can engage in therapy at any time for any reason.
How does psychodynamic psychotherapy work?
Developing a good working relationship where you feel able to talk freely with your therapist is an important part of psychodynamic psychotherapy and so before starting therapy, you will be invited to attend for an initial consultation. The initial consultation will last for up to 90 minutes and will give you the opportunity to begin to talk about some of the problems that have been troubling you.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy sessions take place weekly. The therapy sessions last for 50 minutes and usually take place on the same day and at the same time each week. The length of the therapy will vary from person to person. At the Therapy Life Centre, ‘open ended’, therapy is available, which means there is no fixed end date as the length of your therapy is something for you to decide.
